Change for Sam
The “Change for Sam” strategy was developed in response to the tragic death of Samantha Fraser (Sam) in July 2018. Sam was a Phillip Island local. She was a psychologist, mother, daughter, sister and friend to many. Sam was allegedly murdered by her ex-husband; the father of her children. She was also a very involved community member who was passionate about addressing the challenges of family violence, changing the both fragmented and difficult pathways she walked to make things easier for future women affected by abuse.
The Change for Sam strategy is the product of the community of Phillip Island, Victoria which has been deeply moved by Sam’s death. The outpouring of community outrage, disbelief and frustration in response to Sam’s death is now being positively channelled towards the strategic development of strong community led actions. The community are working together to prevent family violence occurring in the future. The Change for Sam strategy aims to develop a comprehensive, coordinated prevention and response program across the Bass Coast Shire, including a place where combined services are available to support the needs of women 24 hours a day.
Sam should not be defined by the day of her death instead, she should be remembered for the warm, wonderful, kind, caring, strong woman that she was. Together we can all contribute to the change that Sam so dearly desired.
